Done using a slightly modified version of Peter Schiffer's
convert_to_utf_8.sh script. The script was modified so as *not*
a "coding:" marker to the groff source. For now, we'll only put
that marker on pages that contain non-ASCII characters in the
rendered text.

The

There may be more users currently using the system, because not

all programs use utmp logging.

Capitalize first word in heading, but otherwise use lower case,
except where English usage (e.g., proper nouns) or programming
language requirements (e.g., identifier names) dictate otherwise.

Linux utmp entries conform neither to v7/BSD nor to System V; they are a
2008-06-29 04:02:19 +00:00
mix of the two.
2008-06-29 07:01:28 +00:00
2008-06-29 04:02:19 +00:00

v7/BSD has fewer fields; most importantly it lacks
2004-11-03 13:51:07 +00:00
\fIut_type\fP, which causes native v7/BSD-like programs to display (for
2007-04-12 22:42:49 +00:00
example) dead or login entries.
Further, there is no configuration file
which allocates slots to sessions.
BSD does so because it lacks \fIut_id\fP fields.

2007-04-12 22:42:49 +00:00
In Linux (as in System V), the \fIut_id\fP field of a
2004-11-03 13:51:07 +00:00
record will never change once it has been set, which reserves that slot
2007-04-12 22:42:49 +00:00
without needing a configuration file.
Clearing \fIut_id\fP may result
2005-07-06 09:12:50 +00:00
in race conditions leading to corrupted utmp entries and potential
2007-04-12 22:42:49 +00:00
security holes.
2008-06-29 07:01:28 +00:00
Clearing the abovementioned fields by filling them
2008-06-29 04:51:21 +00:00
with null bytes is not required by System V semantics,
but makes it possible to run
2004-11-03 13:51:07 +00:00
many programs which assume BSD semantics and which do not modify utmp.
Linux uses the BSD conventions for line contents, as documented above.

32-bit and 64-bit applications (x86-64, ppc64, s390x, etc.),

\fIut_tv\fP is the same size in 32-bit mode as in 64-bit mode.

The same goes for \fIut_session\fP and \fIut_time\fP if they are present.
