Replace Latin abbreviation "cf.".
...
People seem to be using "cf." ("confere"), which means "compare",
to mean "see" instead, for which the Latin abbreviation would be
"q.v." ("quod vide" -> "which see").
In some cases "cf." might actually be the correct term but it's
still not clear what specific aspects of a function/system call
one is supposed to be comparing.
I left one use in place in hope of obtaining clarification,
because it looks like it might be useful there, if contextualized.
Migrate these uses to English and add them to the list of
abbreviations to be avoided.
If the patch to vfork(2) is not accepted, then the cf. still needs
an \& after it because it is at the end of the line but not the
end of a sentence.

backtrace_symbols_fd() can trigger a call to malloc()

Currently, the backtrace(3) manual page says this about backtrace_symbols_fd():
back‐
trace_symbols_fd() does not call malloc(3), and so can be
employed in situations where the latter function might fail.
However, I watched a video of a presentation about signal handling and
the speaker was saying that calling backtrace() can trigger a call to
malloc - indirectly. That happens because the backtrace*() functions
are part of libgcc, which gets dynamically loaded whenever needed;
dynamic loading would, in turn, trigger a malloc. The talk can be

I decided to test it out, and it seems that this is still true (at
least on Ubuntu 12.04). I compiled the attached program (I used
CXXFLAGS = '-Wall -g -std=c++0x', the -std= part is not really needed)
and ran it through gdb, putting a breakpoint on the line where
backtrace is called. When that breakpoint is hit, I set a breakpoint
on malloc, continued and voila:

Starting with Linux kernel 4.5 and 84638335900f1995
(mm: rework virtual memory accounting) RLIMIT_DATA affects
mmap(2). With d977d56ce5b3e88 (mm: warn about VmData over
RLIMIT_DATA) only warnings are emmitted when going over the
specified RLIMIT_DATA in 4.5.
As of 4.7 and f4fcd55841fc9 (mm: enable RLIMIT_DATA by default
with workaround for valgrind) going over RLIMIT_DATA through
mmap(2) is forbidden.

Add a simple scatter/gather buffer to the cmsg sample code.
It appears that the scatter/gather buffer is required even though
it may not be used. In my testing (on Fedora 24
4.8.7-200.fc24.x86_64 as well as a 4.11 based kernel) return value
of sendmsg() was the number of bytes in the scatter/gather buffer
(1 with the patch below).
Without the iovec buffer, sendmsg() returns 0 which means no bytes
were transferred and the corresponding recvmsg() blocks
indefinitely.

getcontext.3: Exemplar structure should use 'ucontext_t'.

In glibc we just finished a round of purging 'struct ucontext'
which is not in the POSIX reserved namespace of *_t tags. This has
some consequences to applications using the non-standard struct
ucontext:
https://sourceware.org/glibc/wiki/Release/2.26#Removal_of_.27struct_ucontext.27
but it also fixes a namespace conformance issue which is always a
longterm pain for large portable programs.
It was noted by Peter Maydell
(https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21457 ) that the
linux man pages still had references to 'struct ucontext' but only
in the form of an exemplar structure.
The patch fixes the exemplar to match what is in glibc
and therefore it won't ever suggest users can use 'struct
ucontext'.

to introducing subtle bugs if the input stream contains
literal null bytes.
Subsequently, there should be some warning that this occurs,
or an alternative using fwrite(3) might be better.

The ISO/IEC TS 18661-1 specifies the strfrom() class
of functions that convert a float-point value to string.
The strfromd(), strfromf(), and strfroml() functions are
introduced (commit 6962682ffe5e) in GNU C Library 2.25.
