Michael Kerrisk 627e4074b4 user_namespaces.7: Fix description of inheritance of capabilities across nested namespaces
Based on input from Eric Biederman

Calling cap_capable asks: Does the current process have
    capability X in userns U.

I see three ways you can have that capability.

    1) The current process can be in user namespace U and directly
       have capability X.

    2) The current process can be in the parent of namespace U and
its euid can be the euid that created user namespace U.

    3) You can have be have the capability X in a user namespace
that is an ancestor of U.

Coming from the direction of your manpage text.

With respect to capabilities, the following rules apply to
    nested user namespaces.

    1. If a process has a capability in a user namespace has that
capability in all descendant user namespaces as well.

    2. The user that creates a user namespace while in the parent
namespace has all capabilities in the created namespace
and in all descendent user namespaces.

So having said that part of my problem with your original
text is that it actually switches directions. One one rule
it is looking into the descendent user namespaces, and in the
other rule it is looking at ancestor user namespaces.

So perhaps the text should read:

With respect to capabilities, the following rules are used to
answer the question does a process P have a capability C in a
    user namespace U.

    1. P has the capability C if P is in user namespace U and
capability C is in process P's capability set.

    2. P has the capability C if P is in the parent of user
namespace U and the euid of P is the euid that created user
       namespace U.

    3. P has the capability C if P has the capability C in some
user namespace V that is an ancestor of U.

Which probably gets a little extra mathematical, but it is
    precise.

At the time of clone() or unshare() that creates a new user namespace,
the kuid and the kgid of the process does not change.

setuid and setgid fail before any mappings are set up.

Therefore the caller is allowed to map any single uid to the uid of the
caller in the parent user namespace. Likewise the caller is allowed to
map any single gid to the gid of the caller in the parent user

Sorin Dumitru eb67122e5f packet.7: Fix include file
It looks like most of the socket options from this man pages
are not defined in <netpacket/packet.h>. They are defined in
<linux/if_packet.h> so we should include that one.

Note from mtk: it looks like <netpacket/packet.h> was based
on some ancient version of <linux/if_packet.h> that has not
been updated. Since linux/if_packet.h is under the "uapi" tree
the proposed patch seems the bext fix.

Michael Kerrisk e95b1911c4 inotify.7: Clarify with events are generated for watched directories
Really, with respect to watched directories, events fall into
three classes (not two, as was shown):

* Events that can be generated only for the watched directory.
* Events that can be generated only for objects that are inside
  the watched directory.
* Events that can be generated both for the watched directory
and for objects inside the directory.

So, mark these three classes more clearly in the list of inotify
events.

Heinrich Schuchardt ec976a53a3 inotify.7: BUGS: Note possible bug triggered by watch descriptor reuse
Watch descriptor IDs are returned by inotify_add_watch().
When calling inotify_rm_watch() an IN_IGNORE is placed on the
inotify queue pointing to the ID of the removed watch.

inotify_add_watchi() should not return a watch descriptor ID for
which events are still on the queue but should return an
unused ID.

Unfortunately, the existing Kernel code does not provide such a
guarantee.

Actually, in rare cases watch descriptor IDs are returned by
inotify_add_watch() for which events are still on the inotify
queue.

Heinrich Schuchardt 864eccb901 fanotify.7: fanotify_read should use aligned buffer
Michael Kerrisk pointed me to alignment issues which may
arise when reading misaligned integers.

On some systems integer values can only be read if they are
correctly aligned. Other system have a lower performance when
reading from or writing to misaligned memory positions.

Therefore, the buffer used to call read(2) for a fanotify
file descriptor should have the same alignment as
struct fanotify_event_metadata.

Due to the casting to char* inside the macros
FAN_EVENT_OK and FAN_EVENT_NEXT we can use any
data structure for the buffer.

With the patch an array of struct fanotify_event_metadata is
used as buffer which seems a natural choice to ensure proper
alignment.

It should be remembered that the offset between events is given
by field event_len and iterating over the array may not be
allowable in future. Instead the macros should be used.
