To reach me immediately, call 206-240-4250. tag-admin is the editors' list so I suggest you subscribe to it. There are two parts to building LG. First I prepare the issue in my directory, which is currently on my cptr at home. Then to post it, I run a few scripts, copy the issue directory to ratbert, run a few more scripts, wait for the push, send out the announcement e-mails, and rebuild the HtDig search database. The LG docuemntation is at https://www.ssc.com/internal/Departments/Technical/Web/LG/ The big "Building and posting the Gazette (monthly)" is only half up to date. Instead, follow the small checklist "Building April's issue while the Editor is gone (for Dan)". There is one step missing. After step 10, in /LG/www: rm current ln -s issue## current Both parts depend on configuration files in /home/lg/data/ . I modify those on my cptr while I update articles, and then copy them en bloc before posting. So there would be concurrency problems if we both modify them. Do you want to take charge of the configuration files? SSC's copy is up to date now. The first step for beginning a new issue is: edit /home/lg/data/ISSUES : add a line for the next issue copy previous /home/lg/data/issues/PREVIOUS.yml ##.yml In ##.yml, delete all entries except the ones you're sure will be in the next issue. For next month keep lg_mail, lg_tips, lg_answer, lg_bytes, collinge, lodato, okopnik. (Remember to change the titles when you receive the new articles.) [Add a section in the checklist for this.] Then I'll just handle the incoming mail, edit the other pending articles, and get off my butt about recruiting assistant editors to handle an articles each per month. -- -Mike (Iron) Orr, mso@oz.net (iron@sense-sea-MegaSub-1-465.oz.net) English * Esperanto * Russkiy * Deutsch * Espan~ol From mso@oz.net Mon Jul 7 11:33:49 2003 Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 17:45:08 -0700 From: Mike Orr To: Scott Blanchard Subject: Re: Gazette Message-ID: <20030604004508.GC5014@sense-sea-MegaSub-1-465.oz.net> Reply-To: mso@oz.net References: <20030603204655.GJ2378@ssc.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030603204655.GJ2378@ssc.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.28i Status: RO Content-Length: 289 You might as well handle the issue directory too. In /home/lg, as user lg, run 'newissue.sh 92'. That will prepare the ~/issue92 directory. -- -Mike (Iron) Orr, mso@oz.net (iron@sense-sea-MegaSub-1-465.oz.net) English * Esperanto * Russkiy * Deutsch * Espan~ol From mso@oz.net Mon Jul 7 11:33:57 2003 Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 18:04:22 -0700 From: Mike Orr To: Scott Blanchard Subject: Re: Gazette Message-ID: <20030604010422.GD5014@sense-sea-MegaSub-1-465.oz.net> Reply-To: mso@oz.net References: <20030603204655.GJ2378@ssc.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030603204655.GJ2378@ssc.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.28i Status: RO Content-Length: 1362 Save this info for the end of the month. Mick Conry writes News Bytes based on press releases and LWN/Slashdot/Register links I send him, as well as material he gathers himself. He's usually good about sending the article in a couple days before the end of the month. When you receive it, copy the LG cover image (200x268) to misc/bytes/lj-cover.png . The Linux Focus guy may send a list of links at the last minue, which you'll add to the Linux Links section. Heather Stern assembles the Mailbag, 2-Cent Tips and The Answer Gang from mail on the linux-questions-only@ssc.com mailing list. Just untar them and put them in place, then read through them for any obvious HTML errors. Sometimes her script puts an extra slash in the IMG tag for the LG logo. Sometimes there's a message listed twice in the index and the following hyperlinks aren't matched to their label. If so, you'll have to adjust the index links. Her phone numbers are on the volunteers page in the LG documentation. You'll probably have to hound her to get the columns in on time. She does a lot of work to prepare them; it's just there's always something that comes up at the last minute. -- -Mike (Iron) Orr, mso@oz.net (iron@sense-sea-MegaSub-1-465.oz.net) English * Esperanto * Russkiy * Deutsch * Espan~ol
