...
Quoting Branden:
*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54 , the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

feature_test_macros.7: Improve the text on _REENTRANT/_THREAD_SAFE deprecation
...
[mtk] I did a little code spelunking and found the following:
1. In glibc 1.09 (tagged 1995-03-02 in the git history),
__USE_REENTRANT, _THREAD_SAFE, and _REENTRANT do not appear.
2. In glibc-1.93 (tagged 1996-08-29 in the git history),
__USE_REENTRANT governs the exposure of some "_r()"
functions from about a dozen header files. However, it is
defined in <features.h> via
#if defined (__USE_GNU) || defined (__USE_MISC)
#define __USE_REENTRANT 1
#endif
_REENTRANT and _THREAD_SAFE solely govern declarations in
<stdio.h>, where they expose declarations of a few "unlocked"
stdio functions and use #define to redirect a few stdio
function names to "locked" versions.
3. THREAD_SAFE and _REENTRANT first appear in the git logs
1996-05-09.
4. About 9 months later, glibc 2.0.1 arrives on 1997-02-04
(timestamp and tarball taken from
https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/libc/ , since there is no tag in the
git history; casual inspection of the logs suggests the
glibc 2.0 release was about a week earlier.
By now we have the following in <features.h>:
#if defined _REENTRANT || defined _THREAD_SAFE
#define __USE_REENTRANT 1
#endif
And _THREAD_SAFE, and _REENTRANT do not appear appear in
other headers. However, by now, __USE_REENTRANT governs only
the declarations of tmpnam_r() and getlogin_r()
In other words, the window of time where _REENTRANT and
_THREAD_SAFE did anything much in glibc was quite short, IIUC.

...
_POSIX_SOURCE was a POSIX.1-1990 creation that was soon made
obsolete bu _POSIX_C_SOURCE. Retaining mention of it
in the feature test macro requirements section of the
SYNOPSIS doesn't contain important information, and may
mislead readers into actually trying to use this macro.
A few mentions of it a maintained in a some pages where
defining _POSIX_SOURCE inhibits some behavior.

feature_test_macros.7: Update discussion of _FORTIFY_SOURCE
...
Since the initial implementation a lot more checks were added.
Describe all the checks would be too verbose (and would soon
fall out of date as more checks are added). So instead, describe
the kinds of checks that are done more generally.
Also a few other minor edits to the text.
