<title>Fresh@LDP</title>
<para>Only one new document this week, but a very impressive one: Binh
Nguyen released the first official version of the <ulink
url="http://tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Dictionary/html/index.html">Linux
Dictionary</ulink>. With nearly 9000 entries, this is one of the most
complete references currently available.</para>

<title>Proposed new documents</title>
<para>These new ideas this week:</para>
<itemizedlist>
<listitem><para>Mark Hoebeke wants to target the novice developers HOWTO with a <ulink url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4757:200307:fcgicpacfnndhgpgbckc">mini-HOWTO</ulink> about the GNU auto-tools, such as <command>automake</command>, <command>autoconf</command> and <command>libtoolize</command>. His proposal was received very positively.</para></listitem>
<listitem><para>Carsten Kolassa wants to write what he would like to call the <ulink url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4772:200307:egongnhkkehbbbfdeaoj">Network-Programming HOWTO</ulink>, discussing among other topics how to write to and read from a socket, how to write simple servers and sniffers. His primary goal is to write in C, but Carsten plans on adding C++, Perl and Java examples as well.</para></listitem>
<listitem><para>Machtelt Garrels wants to contribute a document called <ulink url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4790:200307:hlbjhhhgndppbpgjlhlo">LDAP Operations HOWTO</ulink>, which is intended to link the <ulink url="http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/LDAP-HOWTO/index.html">LDAP HOWTO</ulink> with the <ulink url="http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/LDAP-Implementation-HOWTO/index.html">LDAP Implementation HOWTO</ulink>.</para></listitem>

The original document, the <ulink url="http://tldp.org/guides.html">Linux Kernel Module Programming Guide</ulink> is authored by Peter J. Salzman and Ori Pomerantz; the Spanish translation is the work of Rubén Melcón Fariña, assisted by Óscar Sanz Lorenzo and Francisco Javier Fernández.</para></listitem>

<title>merge of mini-HOWTOs</title>

Greg Ferguson sent in an <ulink
url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4776:200307:igknncpmmhojbkamcnmn">update</ulink>
indicating that the list of HOWTOs and mini-HOWTOs have been merged and
there is just one master (combined) list in the HOWTO-INDEX vs. the
current two and only <ulink url="http://tldp.org/docs.html#howto">one
set of tar files per document</ulink> variant vs. the current
two.

<title>LDP Author Guide/DocBook, Xml, Jade etc.</title>
<para>
Simon Anderson was <ulink
url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4795:200307:oohajcenhkhogihndlam">frustrated</ulink>
with the LDP author guide and DocBook, and wondered why the LDP used
DocBook even though <quote>Everyone reads HOWTOs in html
anyway</quote>. In response Chris Karakas <ulink
url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4833:200307:eiekdlajdgeofpemfdln">explained</ulink>
why the separation of presentation of content from the content itself
was important. Several people had <ulink
url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4815:200307:pjodbfhkoeponcdaajjl">suggestions</ulink> for
Simon Anderson to deal with <ulink
url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4829:200307:oohajcenhkhogihndlam">
the problems</ulink> that he was facing. Tabatha also <ulink
url="http://lists.tldp.org/index.cgi?1:mss:4815:200307:pjodbfhkoeponcdaajjl">mentioned</ulink>
that the author guide was being reviewed and revamped by Emma Jane
Hogbin.
